Opel Astra H engines
The Opel Astra H established itself as one of the most successful compact cars in Europe from 2004 to 2014 and offered an impressive variety of engines over its lifetime. The Opel Astra H engines evolved continuously and reflected the technological progress of the 2000s, from proven naturally aspirated engines to modern turbocharged units.
Opel Astra H engines (2004-2009)

The early phase of the Opel Astra H was characterized by proven technology and solid engines that could easily reach 250,000 to 350,000 kilometers with proper maintenance. Typical major repairs were usually due between 150,000 and 200,000 kilometers, whereby the diesel engines were generally more durable than the gasoline engines. The absolute top engine of this early generation was the 1.9 CDTI with 150 hp, which optimally combined power, reliability and economy. The technology was still relatively simple, which made repairs inexpensive, but modern efficiency and exhaust technologies were lacking. Compared to competitors such as the VW Golf V or Ford Focus II, the Astra H offered a good price-performance balance with solid workmanship.
Opel Astra H petrol engines (2004-2009)
The Opel Astra H petrol engine range included various naturally aspirated engines from the Ecotec family. The entry-level engine was a 1.4-liter with 66 kW (90 hp), which proved to be economical but underpowered. More popular was the 1.6-liter with 77 kW (105 hp) or 85 kW (115 hp), which offered a good balance of performance and consumption. These Opel Astra H engines were considered robust, but occasionally suffered from problems with the ignition coil and the mass air flow sensor. The most powerful naturally aspirated petrol engine was the 1.8-liter with 103 kW (140 hp), which offered more power but was also significantly more thirsty. All early petrol engines met the Euro 4 standard and were characterized by easy maintenance.
Opel Astra H diesel engines (2004-2009)
The Opel Astra H diesels were dominated by the tried and tested 1.7 CDTI with various output levels from 74 kW (100 hp) to 92 kW (125 hp). This engine proved to be extremely reliable and economical, with a fuel consumption of only 4.8 to 5.5 liters per 100 km. The Opel Astra H 1.9 CDTI was available with 88 kW (120 hp) or 110 kW (150 hp) and was considered the best engine of this generation. These Opel Astra H CDTI engines had modern common-rail injection and an optional particulate filter. Typical weak points were the turbocharger after 180,000 km and occasional problems with the injection system, but overall they were very durable.
| Opel Astra H engine | Power output | Fuel consumption | Typical weaknesses | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.4 Ecotec | 90 HP | 6.8-7.2 l/100km | Underpowered, ignition coils | Average |
| 1.6 Ecotec | 105-115 HP | 7.0-7.8 l/100km | Mass air flow sensor, robust | Good |
| 1.8 Ecotec | 140 HP | 8.2-8.8 l/100km | High fuel consumption | Average |
| 1.7 CDTI | 100-125 HP | 4.8-5.5 l/100km | Turbocharger after 180,000 km | Very good |
| 1.9 CDTI | 120-150 HP | 5.2-5.8 l/100km | Very robust, best engine | Very good |
Opel Astra H engines (2009-2014)
The facelift phase of the Opel Astra H brought significant technical improvements and new engine technologies. Mileage increased to 300,000 to 400,000 kilometers for the best engines, while major repairs were usually only due after 200,000 kilometers. The absolute highlight was the new 2.0 CDTI with 165 hp, which combined state-of-the-art exhaust technology with high performance. Turbo technology was also introduced for the first time in petrol engines with the 1.4 Turbo, although it still had teething problems. The revised engines already met the Euro 5 standard and offered significantly better emission values. The Astra H was now also able to assert itself technologically against the competition and offered modern features such as start-stop systems.
Opel Astra H petrol engines (2009-2014)
The revised Opel Astra H petrol engine range retained the proven naturally aspirated engines, but added new technologies. The 1.4-liter received a power increase to 74 kW (100 hp), while the 1.6-liter was now offered with 85 kW (115 hp) as standard. A new addition was the 1.4 Turbo with 103 kW (140 hp), the first turbocharged gasoline engine in the Astra H. Although this Opel Astra H Turbo offered more power with a smaller displacement, it suffered from problems with the turbocharger and increased oil consumption. The naturally aspirated engines remained the more reliable choice, even if they were less technically advanced. All petrol engines received improvements in emissions control and met the Euro 5 standard.
Opel Astra H diesel engines (2009-2014)
The Opel Astra H diesels received significant improvements with the facelift. The proven 1.7 CDTI was further developed and now offered 81 kW (110 hp) or 96 kW (130 hp). Completely new was the 2.0 CDTI with 118 kW (160 hp) or 121 kW (165 hp), which proved to be a technical masterpiece. These Opel Astra H CDTI engines featured the latest third-generation common-rail technology, bi-turbo charging in the 2.0 CDTI and particulate filters as standard. The Opel Astra H 2.0 CDTI developed into the best engine of the entire series - it was powerful, economical (5.4-6.2 l/100km) and extremely durable. Only the more complex exhaust aftertreatment with AdBlue system in the 2.0 CDTI slightly increased maintenance costs.
Opel Astra H high-performance engines (2009-2014)
For sporty drivers, Opel offered the Astra H OPC with a 2.0 turbo engine with 177 kW (240 hp). This Opel Astra H OPC engine was based on the proven Ecotec technology, but was equipped with a large turbocharger and reinforced components. Despite its power, it proved to be relatively reliable, but required more frequent maintenance and high-quality oils. Fuel consumption was 9.5-11.2 liters per 100 km, which was acceptable for the performance class.
| Opel Astra H engine | Power output | Fuel consumption | Typical weaknesses | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.4 Ecotec | 100 HP | 6.5-7.0 l/100km | Robust, proven | Good |
| 1.6 Ecotec | 115 HP | 6.8-7.5 l/100km | Very reliable | Very good |
| 1.4 Turbo | 140 HP | 6.2-7.8 l/100km | Turbocharger, oil consumption | Moderate |
| 1.7 CDTI | 110-130 HP | 4.5-5.2 l/100km | Robust, economical | Very good |
| 2.0 CDTI | 160-165 HP | 5.4-6.2 l/100km | Best engine, very durable | Very good |
| 2.0 OPC Turbo | 240 HP | 9.5-11.2 l/100km | High maintenance | Good |
