Daihatsu TaftDaihatsu Taft is a car that has been produced from 1974 to 1984 in five and three-door off road vehicle and two-door pickup truck bodies. The assembly lines were located in Japan. Daihatsu Taft was the first car of the company that started to be sold on the German market.
Daihatsu Taft creation historyIn 1974, manufacture of the Daihatsu Taft off-road vehicles began. These cars had enhanced cross-country performance due to their high road clearance, a durable metal body and a minimal amount of plastic parts. The round headlights were closely-spaced and shared a block with the radiator grille. Turn indicators were placed on the same level to them. The side mirrors were installed, on some cars, near the doors, while other variations had the mirrors installed on the hood, close to the headlights. The spare wheel was attached to the outer side of the fifth door.
Quality materials were used predominantly in the trim of the passenger compartment. The dashboard only contained indispensable dials - a speedometer, oil level indicator, and cooling system water indicator. The developers also installed a large, comfortable steering wheel and seats with headrests and lateral support.
In 1979, the developer has presented Daihatsu Taft pick-up trucks with a canvas roof and an open cargo compartment. Access to the cargo compartment was provided through hinged doors. The window wipers were installed, contrary to the vast majority of cars, on the upper rim of the windshield as opposed to the regular lower one. This decision was informed by the windshield’s peculiar design, which allowed it to be lowered all the way down onto the hood.
Daihatsu Taft cars were quite popular, but were replaced on the market by newer, more powerful Daihatsu Rugger vehicles in 1984.
Daihatsu Taft on various marketsIn Germany, Daihatsu Taft were sold as Daihatsu Wildcat. In Austria, these cars were known as Daihatsu Pionier. After the official end of the model’s production, several countries’ markets still saw the cars sold as Daihatsu Taft. These cars were also known as Daihatsu Scat.
