Jeep CJ5-CJ8

The Jeep CJ model is the civilian version of the army Willys MV ORV of World War II times. Jeep CJ5-CJ8 cars were produced from 1954 to 1986.

Jeep CJ5

Creation of Jeep CJ5 was initiated by the new owner of Jeep, the Kaiser company, in 1954. Their production lasted for three decades in spite of the fact that there were Jeeps CJ6, Jeep CJ7, and then and Jeep CJ8 in the market already. 603 303 copies of Jeep CJ5 were during this time assembled.

Jeep CJ5 had a reputation of the ORV that one could disable with great difficulties. Throughout their life cycle, cars were repeatedly transformed. In 1970 the Jeep company was acquired by American Motor Company which began to install their own engines on these ORVs. This, in turn, caused the necessity to enlarge the hood by 127 mm and to extend wheelbase by 76 mm. In 1976 the frame of the car and the fuel tank arrangement was changed. Eventually these changes led to the fact that different accessories were necessary for Jeep CJ5 cars of different years of release.

Jeep CJ6

Jeep CJ6 cars differed from Jeep CJ5 only in wheel base which was 508 mm longer. Their release was carried out from 1956 to 1975. Jeep CJ6 did not enjoy special popularity in the USA. The majority of the cars was on sale to South America and Sweden. In the USA Jeep CJ6 cars found application as office transport of US Forest Service. In total, 50 172 copies of Jeep CJ6 were released.

Jeep CJ7

Production of Jeep CJ7 ORVs was conducted from 1976 to 1986. Jeeps CJ7 differed from Jeep CJ5 cars in longer wheel base (by 254 mm) chassis design. In 11 years of production, 379 299 Jeep CJ7 ORVs were manufactured.

The new system of the automatic Quadra-Trac four-wheel drive, a removable hardtop, steel doors were offered for Jeep CJ7 cars as extra options. By the way, even the passenger seat did not enter standard equipment of Jeep CJ7. The richest package was Laredo package which included bucket seats with leather upholstery with support for the back of the driver or passenger, the steering wheel located atilt, and also the chrome radiator grilles, the front bumper and cases of mirrors.

Jeep CJ8

Jeep CJ8 cars were produced from 1981 to 1986 and differed from Jeep CJ7 in larger wheel base (2370 mm at Jeep CJ7 against 2616 mm at Jeep CJ8). A distinctive feature was the cabin, which could be dismantled in half, transforming the ORV into a pickup.

230 special copies of Jeep CJ7 were manufactured for post service of Alaska. These cars had the right hand steering wheel, a steel roof and hinged doors of the boot.

Jeep CJ5-CJ8 in the markets of the different countries

Jeep CJ5 in Brazil was on sale as Ford Jeep, in South Korea — as Shinjin Jeep. Jeep CJ7 cars under the license were produced in South Korea under the name of SsangYong Korando.
