Opel Admiral
Opel Admiral is model of executive class, a legend of the German automotive industry. It was released in 1937-1939, after the long-lived break, production was resumed in 1964 and proceeded for 13 years.
Opel Admiral 1937–1939
The prototype of the model was presented at the beginning of 1937 at the Berlin motor show, but stock production began only by the end of the year. Opel Admiral, for that time the most prestigious and expensive model of the German car maker, was created for the competition with such cars of executive class as Horch, Mercedes-Benz and Maybach. And the competition was successful: having the similar dimension and power, Opel Admiral cost much less.
Opel Admiral is a four-door sedan, and then the cabriolet appeared. The interior of the car was had leather or fabric upholstery, front and back seats had the form of continuous sofas, in the back part there was an armrest which could be moved to the back of the seat. Clocks, an ashtray and the cigarette lighter, powerful heater were included in the basic package of Opel Admiral.
From the beginning of World War II, production Opel Admiral came to the end: powerful engines began to be installed on the Blitz trucks at military insistence. Already released cars were requisitioned by the German army: the tail of the body was removed and the cars were used as ambulances or utility trucks.
Model A
In 1964 the concern resumed production of Opel Admiral sedan which became part of the KAD series (Kapitän, Admiral, Diplomat) — similar inexpressive cars. Initially all of them were equipped with the same engine, however designers did not stop searches of more powerful motor for the KAD leader - new Opel Admiral.
Model A restyling
In September, 1967, cars of all KAD series underwent small face lifting. Among innovations there was the modified dashboard and a recirculating ball steering.
Model B
The new generation of all KAD range was presented in 1969. It was possible to call stylish design of the Opel Admiral car futuristic and bright for that time, contrary to the restraint reigning in automotive industry of the 1970th years because of fuel crisis. Distinctive features of the car were the chrome radiator grille with large cells, an arched hood, the chrome windshield fringing.
Model B restyling
As a result of restyling in spring of 1976 Opel Admiral received the new dashboard with an antiglare covering and an elaborated four-spoke steering wheel.
In 1977 production of Opel Admiral was stopped because of release of the Opel Senator model.
