Release of the Opel Calibra sporty coupe was carried out from 1990 to 1997. It became the second four-wheel drive vehicle in the history of the Opel brand. Calibra sporty coupes were created in Uusikaupunki, Finland, and in Russelsheim. Germany. The British journalists from the Autocar edition aptly nicknamed this model "Ferrari for the poor".

Opel Calibra A debuted in 1989 at the Frankfurt motor show and practically at once has received an award for the design developed under the leadership of Erhard Schnell. The sporty coupe came to the stock production in 1990. The car succeeded Opel Manta and was constructed on the GM290 platform.

The design of the car differed in the wedge-shaped sidelines narrowed by headlights, angular  rear window and frameless doors. The drag coefficient was reduced to indicators, record for that time — 0,26. The Opel Calibra passenger compartment differed in simplicity and a practicality. Large windscreen provided excellent visibility.

Sports adjustable seats with high-quality lateral support, the ABS system and the central lock, the hydraulic power steering , the electric drive of mirrors and tinted glasses were included in the standard package. As paid options the air conditioner, power windows, heating of seats, the hatch with the electric drive, fog lights were available.

Some modifications of Opel Calibra A could accelerate to 245 km/h. Fuel consumption at the same time were quite low — thanks to excellent aerodynamic properties of a body.

In 1993 design of the model was changed to meet new standards of safety and environmental friendliness.

In 1994 Opel Calibra cars underwent modernization. The emblem of Calibra was moved to the radiator grille, new options of an inner trimming were offered. The design of disks was changed a little, and new control lamps have appeared on the dashboard. In 1997 production of Opel Calibra was stopped.

In Great Britain Opel Calibra was sold under the name of Vauxhall Calibra, In the markets of Australia and Oceania — as Holden Calibra. In South America the model is known under the Chevrolet Calibra name.
