The Peugeot 309 production was established from 1985 to 2000 in France, Spain, the UK and India. Cars were released in three and five-door hatchback.

The cars were built on the Peugeot 205 basis, which partially lent the structure of the body and the design of the side doors.

Despite the compact exterior, the cabin was very roomy: rear seat has been designed for three sitting spots. The driver's seat has been ergonomically designed, anatomically shaped and had lateral support. The three-door hatchbacks were equipped with front seats with improved design: they were regulated along with the back, making it easier for passengers to sit down on the rear seats.

The dashboard was very comfortable and well-readable, headlights and sound signal controllers were under the steering wheel, and a button of remote opening of a fuel tank cap was next to a parking brake.

Peugeot 309 GTi sports modification with a power steering was introduced by a manufacturer as a part of the first generation.

In 1989, there was a restyling of Peugeot 309 cars. There were few exterior changes. The developers installed a new grille, trunk lid and replaced rear lights. Another significant change was the reduction of the trunk board height.

After restyling of Peugeot 309 GTi a new plastic spoiler in body color, was installed instead of a rubber one.

The production of the Peugeot 309 model in Europe ended in 1994.

In 1998, Peugeot signed a contract with the Indian automaker Premier, who has been working with FIAT. Under the agreement, Peugeot 309 had to be assembled at the local plant. However, in 2000, Peugeot abandoned the idea after having released several hundred of cars.
