How do I know if the brake pads on my BMW have failed?

Most modern components include an electronic or mechanical wear sensor. If the pad lining is completely worn down, the warning light will be activated on the dashboard or you will be able to hear a distinctive screeching or grinding sound coming from the wheels. However, it is also necessary to inspect the components if the following symptoms appear:

• Loss of directional stability when driving or braking.
• The brake pedal vibrates or is noticeably less stiff, or the pedal stroke is reduced.
• A burning smell when braking.
• A squealing, knocking, or grinding sound when braking.
• Increased braking distance.

Even if the system is working properly, it is still recommended to measure the thickness of the pads every 20,000 km. It must be no less than the minimum thickness specified by the manufacturer of the vehicle.

What are the causes of premature brake pad wear?

• Driving at high speeds or high-performance driving. Frequent emergency braking leads to increased abrasion and causes the components to overheat. Overheating can cause an irreversible change in the braking performance of the components.
• Exceeding the maximum load capacity of the vehicle. The heavier the vehicle, the more difficult it is to move it or stop it. Consequently, heavy loads put more pressure on the braking system.
• Jammed calipers. If the the guides and/or pistons are not moving properly, the pad lining remains in constant contact with the brake disc and will wear away quickly.
• Brake disc wear. Changes to the surfaces of the brake discs affects how well the pads fit.
• Brake fluid leaks. Oily components reduce the effectiveness of the braking system.

Do I need to bleed the system after replacing the brake pads on my BMW?

To move the components into the right positions, press the brake pedal several times without starting the engine. After that, check the brake fluid level in the expansion tank and, if necessary, bleed the system.
