What is the main function of the EGR valve in BMW vehicles?

The component is responsible for returning a precisely measured volume of exhaust gas to the intake manifold. Redirecting exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber helps to lower the temperature in it and to reduce the amount of toxic nitrogen oxides produced. This ensures that the vehicle meets certain environmental standards. The mechanism also improves the fuel combustion efficiency of the engine and reduces the likelihood of engine knocking.

In addition to this, the device ensures engine stability for the following cases:

• When the engine is warming up.
• At medium revs.
• When the atmospheric pressure drops or fluctuates.

What are the warning signs that the Egr module needs to be replaced?

• Reduced vehicle dynamics.
• The engine switches off when idling or shortly after it is started.
• Increased fuel consumption.
• Louder noises coming from the engine while it is running.
• Black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe.
• The "Check Engine" light on the dashboard is on.

Does the Exhaust gas recirculation valve in BMW cars need servicing?

It is recommended to carry out the following inspections before the summer and winter seasons every year:

• Inspect the wiring, connectors, and vacuum tubes to the valve.
• Check the condition of its winding.
• Perform computer diagnostics on the engine ECU.

After every 60,000–80,000 km, the component should be cleaned to remove carbon deposits and oil residues.

Can I replace the EGR valve in my BMW myself?

Yes. However, please note that the part can easily be damaged if it is installed incorrectly. In addition, after it has been replaced, you will need to test the new part and, if necessary, adjust the device using special equipment. If you don't have the necessary skills, it is better to contact a certified specialist.
