Audi A1 engines
Since its market launch in 2010, the Audi A1 has established itself as a premium small car and offers a sophisticated range of Audi A1 engines across two generations. The technological development of the engines reflects Audi's progress from conventional drives to highly efficient mild-hybrid systems.
Audi A1 Generation I (2010-2018)

The first Audi A1 generation was Audi's entry into the premium small car segment and was characterized by compact but durable engines. With proper maintenance, mileage reached between 200,000 and 300,000 kilometers, with the smaller engines often running more reliably than the more powerful variants. Major repairs were typically due between 150,000 and 200,000 kilometers, mainly on the timing chain, turbocharger or clutch. The absolute top engine of this generation was the 1.4 TFSI with 185 hp, which offered impressive performance despite its compactness and proved to be surprisingly robust. Technically, all Audi A1 engines were based on proven Volkswagen Group units, which were, however, specially tuned for the premium small car.
Audi A1 petrol engines: Generation I (2010-2018)
The Audi A1 petrol engine range started with the 1.2 TFSI as the entry-level engine with 63 kW (86 PS), which proved to be economical and reliable, but reached its limits when driving on the highway. The popular 1.4 TFSI was available in various output levels from 90 kW (122 hp) to 136 kW (185 hp) and formed the heart of the Audi A1 engine range. These Audi A1 TFSI engines were based on the EA111 unit and showed typical weaknesses in the timing chain, which was due for replacement between 100,000 and 150,000 kilometers. The most powerful Audi A1 petrol engine was the 2.0 TFSI in the S1 quattro with 170 kW (231 hp), which was, however, more maintenance-intensive due to its complexity and all-wheel drive.
Audi A1 diesel engines: Generation I (2010-2018)
The Audi A1 diesels were dominated by the 1.6 TDI with outputs ranging from 66 kW (90 PS) to 85 kW (116 PS). This Audi A1 TDI was based on the tried-and-tested EA189 engine and was considered particularly economical with an average consumption of just 3.8-4.2 liters per 100 kilometers. The more modern 1.4 TDI with 66 kW (90 PS) was added later, but was less widespread. The Audi A1 diesel engines proved to be very reliable, but occasionally suffered from problems with the particulate filter in predominantly urban use. The 1.6 TDI with 85 kW (116 hp) developed into the best diesel engine of this generation and offered the optimum balance between performance, consumption and reliability.
| Audi A1 engine | Power output | Fuel consumption | Typical weaknesses | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.2 TFSI | 86 HP | 5.1-5.5 l/100km | Weak at highway speeds | Good |
| 1.4 TFSI | 122-185 HP | 5.4-6.8 l/100km | Timing chain, turbocharger | Average |
| 2.0 TFSI quattro | 231 HP | 7.4-8.1 l/100km | Complex, high-maintenance | Moderate |
| 1.4 TDI | 90 HP | 3.9-4.3 l/100km | Not very common | Good |
| 1.6 TDI | 90-116 HP | 3.8-4.2 l/100km | Particle filter for short distances | Very good |
Audi A1 Generation II (2018-today)

The second Audi A1 generation marked a significant technological leap and relies entirely on modern TFSI petrol engines with improved efficiency and reliability. Most Audi A1 engines of this generation easily reach 250,000 to 300,000 kilometers with proper maintenance, with the smaller units being considered particularly durable. Major engine failures have become rare; problems with the timing chain can only occur if maintenance is neglected. The absolute highlight is the 2.0 TFSI in the S1 with 207 hp - a technical masterpiece that combines sporty performance with surprisingly high suitability for everyday use. For the first time, Audi completely dispensed with diesel engines and opted for a pure petrol engine range with mild hybrid technology from 2019.
Audi A1 petrol engines: Generation II (2018-today)
The current Audi A1 engine range is based exclusively on TFSI petrol engines from the EA211 family. The entry-level model is the 1.0 TFSI with 70 kW (95 PS), which has proven to be economical and reliable. The popular 1.5 TFSI is available with 110 kW (150 PS) and features cylinder deactivation and, from 2019, 48-volt mild hybrid technology. These second-generation Audi A1 TFSI engines show significantly fewer problems than their predecessors, with only occasional weaknesses in valve coking after high mileage. The most powerful Audi A1 petrol engine is the 2.0 TFSI in the S1 with 152 kW (207 hp), which offers impressive performance despite its compact size and proves to be surprisingly robust.
Audi A1 mild hybrid technology: Generation II (2019-today)
From 2019, Audi introduced 48-volt mild hybrid technology in the A1, initially in the 1.5 TFSI. The system supports the combustion engine when starting off and enables coasting at constant speed. The Audi A1 mild hybrid reduces fuel consumption by around 0.3-0.5 liters per 100 kilometers and noticeably improves running smoothness. This technology has proven to be reliable and low-maintenance; only the 48-volt battery should be replaced after around 8-10 years.
| Audi A1 engine | Power output | Fuel consumption | Typical weaknesses | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0 TFSI | 95 HP | 4.8-5.3 l/100km | Occasionally sluggish under full load | Very good |
| 1.5 TFSI | 150 HP | 5.1-5.7 l/100km | Valve coking after high mileage | Very good |
| 1.5 TFSI MHEV | 150 HP | 4.9-5.4 l/100km | 48V battery after 8-10 years | Very good |
| 2.0 TFSI | 207 HP | 6.4-7.1 l/100km | Sporty tuning, robust | Good |
