Renault Twingo: problems with the gearbox, throttle body, and other common faults
Having troubles with your Twingo? Check out our guide to spotting the most common Renault Twingo problems.
Renault Twingo: common problems
Renault Twingo clutch problems
The clutch linkage connecting the pedal to the rest of the assembly is a weak point for the Renault Twingo and other models. In some cases, the rod pops out of its ball joint, causing a loose or inoperative clutch pedal. This is often the result of excessive wear.
Recognising the cause of the fault may prevent you from replacing the entire clutch pedal assembly unnecessarily - don’t waste a pretty penny!
Renault Twingo throttle body problems
Some drivers report that their engine is running erratically with symptoms like rough idling, frequent stalling, or a poor fuel economy. The cause is sometimes related to the Renault Twingo throttle body or its control module.
In modern models, the ECM uses the throttle body to regulate the flow of air into the engine and allows it to sustain idling speeds. In certain cases, there is a fault in the control module preventing the throttle from controlling the airflow correctly or there is a blockage in the mechanism itself, obstructing the airflow.
Detached bonnet skin
There have been a couple of recalls concerning the weaknesses of the bonnet. The most recent one affected Twingo cars made between 25 March 2019 and 12 April 2021. The manufacturer identified a risk of the outer bonnet skin detaching from the vehicle.
A similar recall was issued for models manufactured between 7 May 2014 and 6 July 2015. Authorised dealers were consequently instructed to add reinforcements to the welds of the bonnet cover. If you are unsure whether your vehicle still needs fixing, contact your local dealer.

Renault Twingo gearbox problems
You may find that the gears become more difficult to shift or start to slip. With an automatic gearbox, you should check the Renault Twingo transmission fluid levels, the torque converter and clutch assembly, and the transmission bands and solenoid. These problems are often caused by issues concerning the quality or quantity of the fluid.
Timing chain and belt problems
Is your engine misfiring or running rough? Perhaps it’s time to replace the Renault Twingo timing chain or belt. When timing components are worn, damaged, or slipping, it can cause engine havoc.
Rubber belts can also stretch as a result of improper tension, high operating temperatures, oil contamination or misalignment. If the belt shows signs of stretching, cracking or severe wear, it is best to get it replaced to avoid further damage to the engine.

Faulty seat belt
Some car owners complain that the seat belts won’t lock properly when pulled. If you are experiencing this, it’s important to get it fixed as soon as possible to avoid serious injuries in the event of an accident. You may need to replace the whole seat belt assembly.
Renault had to issue a recall in the UK as due to a manufacturing defect, there was a possibility that the seat belt buckles could become loose, leaving the driver and passengers at risk in the event of a collision. This affected vehicles made between 29 September 2014 and 29 October 2014.
Renault Twingo electrical problems
Different versions of this model may be more susceptible to certain electrical faults. For example, there are a number of reports of a faulty ignition key or fob. The commonly reported cause is a software fault, preventing the user from opening the car doors.
Another frequently reported issue is a defective heater that cuts out or isn’t blowing warm air. The common culprit is a bad heater resistor although it could also be a faulty switch.
