Vredestein Wintrac Reviews
The Vredestein Wintrac is a winter tire developed for compact and mid-range passenger cars and smaller SUVs. In the independent tests by ADAC and ÖAMTC, it was evaluated in terms of its driving safety on winter, wet and dry roads as well as in terms of economy and comfort. The tire was tested in several common dimensions, including 205/60 R16 92H (ADAC 2023), 205/55 R16 91H (ADAC 2024) and 195/65 R15 91T (ÖAMTC 2021). The test results show that the Wintrac delivers solid performance, especially on snow and in the wet, while showing weaknesses in handling on dry roads. The efficiency values, for example in terms of weight, fuel consumption and abrasion, are also among its positive characteristics. The ratings vary depending on the dimension and range from "highly recommended" to "sufficient".

Performance on snow
In snow performance reviews, the Vredestein Wintrac achieved good to very good results overall. The ADAC rated the performance in the 205/60 R16 (2023) dimension positively, with decent braking distances and good controllability in handling, although traction was only satisfactory. Specifically, a braking distance of 10.2 m (30-0 km/h) and snow traction of 248.6 dN were measured. The 205/55 R16 (2024) test confirms this picture: good braking distances, still acceptable traction and very good reserves at the limit, with measured values of 10.5 m in snow braking and 235 dN traction. The ÖAMTC awarded a score of 2.2 for snow in 2021, with a particularly good result in the "Passing & Handling" category (1.67). These values show that the tire is one of the more reliable in the test field on wintry surfaces.
ADAC 205/60 R16 (2023): Snow "good"; braking distance 10.2 m; traction 248.6 dN.
ADAC 205/55 R16 (2024): Snow "good"; braking distance 10.5 m; traction 235 dN.
ÖAMTC 195/65 R15 (2021): Snow rating 2.2; handling 1.67.

Performance on wet roads
The Vredestein Wintrac also performed solidly in the wet, albeit not always at the best level. In the 205/60 R16 (2023) size, the braking distances on wet asphalt and concrete were measured at 39.1 m and 39.8 m respectively, which, in conjunction with good longitudinal aquaplaning behavior (85.0 km/h), led to a good overall rating. The tire shows weaknesses in transverse aquaplaning (3.3 m/s²) and in handling, where it just misses out on a better rating. In the 205/55 R16 (2024) test, it again demonstrated strong braking performance and good aquaplaning values both longitudinally and laterally, but did not achieve more than "satisfactory" in handling. The ÖAMTC awarded an overall rating of 2.3 for wet conditions in 2021, with strong results for braking (2.13) and longitudinal aquaplaning (2.0). This means that the Wintrac is well equipped for wet conditions, even if it is not one of the most agile at the limit.
ADAC 205/60 R16 (2023): Wet "still good"; braking distance 39.1/39.8 m; aquaplaning longitudinal 85.0 km/h; lateral 3.3 m/s².
ÖAMTC 195/65 R15 (2021): Wetness rating 2.3; braking 2.13; aquaplaning longitudinal 2.0; transverse 2.75.

Dry handling
On dry roads, the tests show clear weaknesses of the Vredestein Wintrac. In the ADAC tests (205/60 R16, 2023), a good dry braking distance of 42.9 m was achieved, but the testers criticized the inadequate feedback and precision in steering behavior. Frequent steering corrections in bends and a tendency to oversteer during evasive maneuvers limit confidence in the tire. The behavior at the limit is only rated as "satisfactory". The verdict is similar in the 205/55 R16 dimension: the braking distance of 44.5 m is still within an acceptable range, but the driving stability and cornering behavior remain weak. The ÖAMTC awards a rating of 2.5 for dry performance in 2021 with sub-ratings of 2.5 to 2.63 for driving safety and handling.
ADAC 205/60 R16 (2023): Dry "satisfactory" at the limit; braking distance 42.9 m.
ADAC 205/55 R16 (2024): Dry "weak"; braking distance 44.5 m.
ÖAMTC 195/65 R15 (2021): Dry rating 2.5; braking 2.0.

Braking performance
The braking values vary depending on the surface and dimension, but remain solid overall. With 205/60 R16 (2023), the ADAC measured 42.9 m dry, 39.1/39.8 m wet and 19.1 m on ice. The 205/55 R16 version (2024) measures 44.5 m dry, 36.1/40.3 m wet and 19.4 m on ice. These values underline good performance on slippery surfaces, especially in the wet and on ice. The ÖAMTC (2021) awards a score of 2.0 for braking on dry, 2.13 on wet, 2.5 on snow and 2.0 on ice, which shows an overall balanced braking performance in winter conditions.
ADAC 205/60 R16 (2023): Dry 42.9 m; wet 39.1/39.8 m; ice 19.1 m.
ADAC 205/55 R16 (2024): Dry 44.5 m; Wet 36.1/40.3 m; Ice 19.4 m.
ÖAMTC 195/65 R15 (2021): Braking dry 2.0; wet 2.13; snow 2.5; ice 2.0.

Economy
The economy values of the Wintrac vary depending on the tested dimension. In the ADAC test 205/60 R16 (2023), a good environmental balance is achieved with a predicted mileage of 44,700 km, an abrasion of 62.0 mg/km/t, a low weight of 8.7 kg and an economical consumption of 5.6 l/100 km. In the 205/55 R16 (2024) dimension, the environmental balance is "satisfactory", partly due to the lower predicted mileage of 33,400 km and higher abrasion of 72.0 mg/km/t. Nevertheless, the efficiency potential remains recognizable due to the low weight (8.3 kg) and economical consumption (5.1 l/100 km). In 2021, the ÖAMTC rates fuel consumption at 1.7 and wear at 2.0, meaning that the Wintrac scores highly in terms of economy, especially in certain sizes.
ADAC 205/60 R16 (2023): Environmental balance 2.4; mileage 44,700 km; wear 62.0 mg/km/t; fuel consumption 5.6 l; weight 8.7 kg.
ADAC 205/55 R16 (2024): Life cycle assessment 3.3; mileage 33,400 km; abrasion 72.0 mg/km/t; consumption 5.1 l; weight 8.3 kg.
ÖAMTC 195/65 R15 (2021): Fuel consumption 1.7; wear 2.0.

Noise development
The noise development of the Vredestein Wintrac is relatively low in both ADAC tests. In the 205/60 R16 (2023) dimension, a pass-by noise of 71.3 dB(A) was measured. The 205/55 R16 (2024) model has the lowest value in the test field at 70.4 dB(A), which is also confirmed by the EU label at 70 dB. The ÖAMTC rated the noise development in 2021 at 2.8, divided into interior noise (2.75) and exterior noise (2.7). These values prove that the Wintrac remains pleasantly inconspicuous in terms of acoustics.
ÖAMTC 195/65 R15 (2021): Score 2.8 (inside 2.75; outside 2.7).

Price-performance ratio
The test results for the Vredestein Wintrac show that the relationship between performance and efficiency depends heavily on the tire size selected. In the ADAC rating 2023 (205/60 R16), it received an overall score of 3.1, supported by good winter and wet performance as well as an above-average environmental balance. The 205/55 R16 (2024) model, on the other hand, only achieved an "adequate" rating (3.8), mainly due to its poor driving characteristics on dry roads and only satisfactory environmental performance. In contrast, the 2021 tire in 195/65 R15 was awarded "highly recommended" (2.3) by the ÖAMTC, supported by good values for fuel consumption, wear and balanced driving characteristics. This makes it clear that the purchase decision depends to a large extent on the specific dimension.
