Honda ConcertoHonda Concerto was manufactured during 1988-1994 period. The production was established in the city of Suzuka (Mie prefecture) and Longbridge factory, Birmingham (England). The production in the UK started at the end of 1989.
Honda Concerto originHonda Concerto is a result of collaboration between Honda Motor Co. Ltd and British company Austin Rover Group. Car was oriented on European market. It came to replace Honda Ballade and Honda Integra, which production was cancelled due to low demand.
There were 5-door hatchback Honda Concerto and sedan version manufactured. In most countries and Australia, only hatchbacks were available.
Honda Concerto cars were built on platform of Honda Civic, popular at that time. Exterior design elements were mostly taken from Honda Ascot. British and Japanese models got almost no differences and many common components.
Exterior distinctive features of Japanese cars were horizontally stretched headlights, a narrow radiator grille, extruded wheel arches, color-keyed side mirrors, moldings, and stamping on the hood lid. The main difference was in front axle suspension construction: Birmingham cars were supplied with McPherson, while Japanese ones – double wishbone suspension.
In 1991-1992 Honda Concerto Exclusive sedan was produced. Basic options were rear seat belts, steering column with adjustable height, power windows, central lock, CD-player, leather seats upholstery.
Honda Motor Co., Ltd. closed Honda Concerto production in Great Britain when its partner, Austin Rover Group, passed under control of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG Deutsch corporation in 1994. Sedan production ended a year earlier. Honda Concerto gave a place to Honda Domani on Japanese market.
Honda Concerto on different marketsCars produced in the UK were sold on different markets under the names of Rover 416, Rover 216 and Rover 220.
