The Hyundai Lantra model was released from 1990 to 2000. Assembly of cars was adjusted in South Korea, Botswana and Indonesia.

Production of the first generation has continued till 1993. The Hyundai Lantra J1 cars were manufactured in a sedan body type. Smooth lines of the body gave delicacy and laconicism to the exterior. The hatch in the roof was included in the top modification.

In 1993 there was a restyling of the Hyundai Lantra J1 model. On a radiator grille the logo of the Hyundai Motor Company company appeared. Changes affected front and rear bumpers. Cars began to be completed with anti-lock brake system (ABS), frontal airbags, fog lights and side mirrors with the electric drive. As an option, light-alloy seven-spoke wheel discs were offered.

From 1995 to 1998 the second generation of the model was manufactured. The Hyundai Lantra J2 model began to be produced in bodies of a sedan and a station wagon. The sedans, focused on the European market, had a chromeplated radiator grille. Station wagons were manufactured without false radiator grille on the front part of the body and had the railings on the roof.

In 1998 the car was restyled. The model had a new radiator grille. Also headlights were changed. The interior began to be covered with velour.

The Hyundai Lantra J2 sedans in South Korea were known asHyundai Avante, and station wagons — under the name of Hyundai Avante Touring. In the Australian market cars of the second generation in a body of a station wagon were called Hyundai Lantra Sportswagon. In Indonesia from 1996 to 1998 cars were called Bimantara Nenggala.

Since 2001 outside South Korea cars began to be called Hyundai Elantra. Production of this model continues till present.
