Toyota 4 Runner is a crossover released since 1984 till present. Initially the car was developed as a smaller analog of the Toyota Highlander model, but afterwards the designers refused this idea, developing it as a completely independent model.

Toyota 4 Runner reached special popularity in Somalia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Great Britain, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The car is manufactured in Japan and Brazil.

Toyota 4 Runner N60 went on sale in 1984. The design of the car was almost similar to Toyota Hilux, but the basis of the model was formed by the Toyota Trekker. The car was released only in a pickup body. In 1986 designers have carried out the restyling of the first generation of the car. The radiator grille, head lights, a bumper and fenders were updated.

The Japanese concern announced the second generation of Toyota 4 Runner N120/N130 in 1989. The car left in the stock production in 1990. The design of the car cardinally differed from an exterior of cars of the first generation. The model had a steel body, and all the acute angles were smoothed. Designers set a new front bumper and replaced the radiator grille. The car was released in 3-and the 5-door SUV bodies whereas the pickup was laid off.

In 1991 designers have carried out restyling of the second generation of the car, the body was modernized and the model exterior was changed a little. Some minor changes of design were carried out also in 1993 and 1995.

Crash tests in 1993 and 1994 forced designers to improve security systems of the driver and passengers considerably. The set of airbags was added to a basic model of the third generation of N180 Toyota 4 Runner cars produced in 1995. The new generation of the car became the owner of the long wheel base, the roomy passenger compartment, anti-lock braking system (ABS).

In 1997-1999 designers have carried out three restylings of the third generation. A significant amount of additional options was added, the interior was improved, and also the front part of a body was slightly changed. In 2001 the car got the updated radiator grille and new tail position lights.

The fourth generation of Toyota 4 Runner became available in 2002. Its design was based on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120 model. The car had the enlarged head lights, the rounded-off bumper and the changed radiator grille shape. Climate control, rear-view mirrors with the electric drive, geo navigation and the HomeLink system were added to the set of basic options.

In 2003-2007 designers improved the car and have carried out four face liftings. As a result the model got completely changed front part of a body and the updated shape of a rear bumper and position lights. Also the quantity of available options was extended.

The fifth generation of Toyota 4 Runner was presented in Texas in 2009. The exterior of the car became more aggressive because of the changed front part of the body. Designers made a massive bumper, changed a form of a hood and head lights. The model had active traction control system (A-TRAC), system of kinetic dynamic suspension system (KDSS) and Crawl Control system of the help when driving with lack of roads.

Within a IIHS safety rating the model got an excellent assessment.

In 2013 the car got new LED headlights and the upgraded radiator grille. Designers began to use more expensive materials for the compartment upholstery.
