Toyota Tercel is the car released from 1978 to 1999. In 2000 it was replaced by the new Toyota Platz model. Production of the car was arranged at Takaok and Hino's plants in Japan.

The name "Tercel" is translated from Latin as "third". It means that the car is much less than Toyota Corolla model on the basis of which it was created. Also the name is conformable with the word "tiercel" — subspecies of a falcon.

The model entered domestic market of Japan in 1978. Sales in Europe began in 1979, and in America — in 1980. The car was accessible in bodies of 2- a 4-door sedan and a 3-door hatchback. The first generation had the name Toyota Corolla Tercel.

Toyota Tercel became the first front-wheel car of concern in which the engine was located longwise. Besides, the car had a special design of transmission and differentials.

In 1980 developers carried out face lifting - they changed an interior and the nose of the car a little.

The second generation, which release started in 1982, did not have the Corolla prefix in the name. In Japan the model was available in bodies of a3-and a 5-door hatchback, the 5-door station wagon and a 4-door sedan, but hatchbacks were mainly delivered for import.

The updated car received the new forefront of a body. New bumpers, a radiator grille were set and the hood shape was changed. The wheel base of the car was a little shortened.

In 1985 designers set a radiator grille of a new shape and improved a car interior.

In 1987 developers presented Toyota Tercel of the third generation. Designers considerably upgraded the engine and transmission. Also the independent suspension was established.

Changes in design of the car were slight. The shape of a body remained invariable, but front and rear headlights were a little narrowed. Also developers changed the shape of a front bumper and a radiator grille.

The updated model enjoyed special popularity in North America. At the same time it was not exported to Europe.

The concern presented the fourth generation of model in 1990. The car was accessible in bodies of a 3-door hatchback, a 2-door coupe and a 4-door sedan. At the same time in the North American market only the 2-door sedan moved ahead, and in other countries it was inaccessible.

After restyling of 1993, the car received the updated front headlights. Besides, Toyotas Tercel was supplied with anti-lock braking system (ABS), extra airbags for the driver and passengers and the updated air conditioner.

For the South American market developers offered several extra packages. In Chile and Brazil the most expensive LEI package with a tachometer, new door locks and removable seats was especially popular.

In September, 1994, completely updated Toyota Tercel model of the fifth generation was presented. The car received the stylish design of an exterior characterized by the smoothly varying lines of a body, larger headlights and a stylish radiator grille. Because of the big area of a glazing, a car had excellent visibility.

In 1997 designers offered new packages: RedHawk, WhiteHawk and BlackHawk. Among their equipment there were a spoiler, 14-inch disks, a metal radiator grille, marker lights integrated into block headlights and logo plate in the form of a falcon.

Toyota Tercel of the first generation in the Japanese domestic market received the name Toyota Corsa, and later — Toyota Sprinter Carib. In Europe the car was released under the name Toyota Corolla II.
