Pulley pullers: what you need to know

A pulley puller is necessary for dismounting parts of timing belts when repairing an engine, air conditioning compressor, alternator or power steering pump. It can be also used if you need to remove timing gears or a steering wheel.

Operating principle

The tool is rectangular or cylindrical plate with a perpendicular threaded rod. The plate is rigidly attached to the pulley. As the rod is being turned, it touches the shaft of the assembly or intermediate piece. As the rod is being turned further, the part is being pulled from its seat.

What are the types of pulley pullers?

By intended purpose:

• For specific purposes. Designed for the units of certain car makes. For example, there are devices intended for removing crankshaft gears from VW and Audi cars.
• Universal. Suitable for dismounting pulleys of various designs regardless of the car make and model.

By design:

• With claw legs. Special hook-like claws ensure a secure connection between the tool and pulley. As a rule, their position can be regulated by adjusting the diameter between the legs according to the size of the spare.
• With bolts. The puller housing is bolted to the pulley. This connection is considered to be the most reliable but the usage of the tool is restricted by the position of the holes on the spare which is going to be removed.

Tips on using pulley pullers

For efficient and safe operations, it is necessary to assemble and adjust the device properly. Therefore, you should read the manufacturer’s manual carefully.

The position of the claw legs should correspond to the diameter of the pulley. Otherwise, the tool can slip from its surface which might cause injuries.

The elements of the device, especially, the thread of the rod shouldn’t be damaged or covered with dirt. Otherwise, there is a risk of the tool getting stuck.

You should clean the item after the work is done. It is recommended to keep it in a dry place, preferably in a special box.
