Wear of the fuel pump is a common malfunction of the fuel system. Breakdown is a consequence of exceeding recommended operation terms and usage of the component in high load conditions.
How to detect wear of mechanical fuel pump
Such a fault is hard to detect without specialists' help, as the signs of wear may be caused by various faults.
- Hard start. Observe how your engine hot starts. If nothing unusual happens, and the engine starts normally, but the problems appear at cold engine start, or during a trip, then malfunction of the fuel pump may be excluded.
- Change of the working engine tone. It is the earliest sign of a fuel pump fault.
- Decreasing of engine power. Special attention should be paid to vehicle behavior during overtaking and uphill driving. If operation of the vehicle is significantly different in these circumstances, the problem may be fuel poor quality, improper adjustment of ignition, or wear of the fuel pump.
Causes of mechanical fuel pump wear
Despite the fact that fuel pump service life may exceed 200000 operational kilometres, there are factors that greatly accelerate the wear:
- Absence of fuel in the tank. Vehicle operation with the minimal fuel level may result in fuel pump temperature increasing, which in turn may result in premature wear of the unit components.
- Power supply circuit fault. Exceeding of the recommended nominal capacity of fuse results in pump running in emergency mode, i.e. in high load conditions. This results in a failure of the component elements.
- Dirt in fuel. Usage of poor quality fuel results in filter soiling and, consequently, in decreased performance of the pump and deterioration of the component working conditions.
How to prevent wear of mechanical fuel pump
The key of part continuous functioning is regular component inspection. It should be performed each 100000 operational kilometres at least. Inspection of the fuel pump should be started with the wiring, if there is any. Sometimes it is enough to replace the fuse. For complex component diagnostics, performance of the pump should be measured and compared to the one specified in certificate.
The pump should be repaired or replaced only at service stations. Unqualified tampering may result in failure of the component, or of the whole system.
How to choose mechanical fuel pump
The choice of any component for a vehicle should be based only on the manufacturer recommendations and operational characteristics of the vehicle and the component. Non-compliance may result is the pump operating constantly in high load conditions. An important factor is the quality of component and fuel. Therefore, preference should be given to proven gas stations and shops
