Before replacing rear view mirrors on the VW PASSAT Variant (3B6) vehicle, prepare appropriate tools — wrenches of certain diameter, and screwdrivers, and a small container for dismantled fasteners.

Before starting works, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery to avoid short-circuit.

In the cold season, perform all operations in a well heated room. Under the influence of low temperature, the plastic elements become brittle, so the door trim panel or triangular cover retainers may be easily damaged. If this is not possible, warm up the passenger compartment by starting the engine and turning the heater on in an appropriate mode.

To release the retainers on the triangular trim cover, a straight screwdriver is often used. However, this way it is easy to scratch the frame of the door, or the cover itself. To avoid this, use a plastic wedge.

First pull the plastic trim cover towards yourself, and then lift it up. Be careful not to break the retainers and the guide on the cover.

If mechanical rear-view mirrors are installed on the VW PASSAT Variant (3B6) vehicle, be sure to take a picture of locations of the cables, or mark them, so as not to confuse them during re-installation. Otherwise, the mirrors drive mechanism may work incorrectly.

When unscrewing the last attachment, hold the mirror housing with your hand, otherwise it may fall and break.

Before installing a new component, clean dirt from its seat. Make sure that the connectors are not cracked, and their contacts are not oxidized.

Adjust the rear view mirrors on the VW PASSAT Variant (3B6) vehicle. To adjust the left mirror, sit in the driver's seat and lean to the window as much as possible. The mirror should be adjusted so that the reflection of the fender would take approximately a quarter of the area of the mirror element. The right mirror is adjusted in a similar way, but adjustment should be performed after leaning to the center of the vehicle.

Ask an assistant to walk around the VW PASSAT Variant (3B6) vehicle at the distance of two meters. His reflection should disappear in the side rear view mirror, and immediately appear in the rear view mirror in the passenger compartment.

Clean the mirror surface, and treat it with a special agent. When using hydrophobic sprays, thin film is formed on the surface of the glass, which prevents mirror fouling, and improves visibility in rainy weather.
