Volkswagen Passat
Volkswagen Passat is one of the most successful cars of the company. Its production began in 1973 and continues till present.
The name "Passat" carries on tradition of the producer to name models after winds and atmospheric phenomena. It stands for a warm tropical wind which blows from tropics to the equator.
Volkswagen Passat 1973–1997
Volkswagen Passat B1 cars went in stock production in 1973. The exterior of the model was developed by the famous Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. The model was released in bodies of 3-and a 5-door hatchback, station wagon and 2-and 4-door fastback.
The first generation of Volkswagen Passat was almost identical to Audi 80. The model became one of the first European family cars therefore received huge popularity.
The second generation of Volkswagen Passat B2 was produced in 1981. Also 4-and 2-door sedans were added. Designers installed updated rectangular headlights, but the main highlights in design of the body remained the same.
Release of the third generation of Volkswagen Passat B3 started in 1988. Since the third generation, sedans and station wagons only were manufactured.
In 1993 developers presented Volkswagen Passat B4. Engineers enlarged front headlights, updated the radiator grille and both bumpers. Interior design was left practically without changes.
Volkswagen Passat B5
Completely changed Volkswagen Passat of the fifth generation appeared before motorists in 1997. Thanks to stylish design of the exterior with abundance of smooth lines, the car received a high level of aerodynamics.
Volkswagen Passat B5,5
In 2000 there was a restyling of the fifth generation. The car received minor changes of the exterior: the updated bumpers, side marker lights, the chrome radiator grille and optical front headlights were established on the car.
When creating the engines, engineers used the new "W engine" technology. The model became available with a long wheel base.
Volkswagen Passat B6
The presentation of the sixth generation of Volkswagen Passat took place at the Geneva auto show in 2005. Technical capabilities of the model were considerably improved. The engine, transmission and a suspension were updated. Engineers paid special attention to system of fuel injection and differentials.
Thanks to the electronic stabilization program (ESP), in 2008 the model came first in the "Towcar of the Year" rating.
Volkswagen Passat B7
The car of the seventh generation was presented in 2010 at the Paris auto show. The designer Walter de Silva was engaged in modernization of the exterior. The car received dynamic front headlights, system of automatic emergency braking, active suspension. The driver’s attention control system (ACS), determining the level of sleepiness of the driver, became a novelty.
At the motor-show in 2010 in Tokyo, developers presented the 5-door Volkswagen Passat Alltrack station wagon.
Volkswagen Passat B8
In 2014 at the auto show in Paris, the presentation of Volkswagen Passat of the eighth generation took place. The car is based on the MQB platform. Technical capabilities remained at the former level, but engineers added a large number of options. There was a driving assistance system, cruise control and park assist. Also a hybrid modification of the car was available for sale. In 2015 the model received the "European Car of the Year" title.
