What is an ABS: meaning and definition, features, functions and advantages
ABS (Anti-lock braking system) is a system, which prevents full locking of the vehicle wheel at sharp braking.
Advantages of ABS installation:
- short brake path;
- better grip with the road surface;
- steerability of a vehicle at braking moment;
- higher wear-resistance of tyres.
The main components of the system are:
Sensors
Control unit
Pressure modulator
The ABS sensors are mounted in the wheels and aimed to control their rotation speed. The control unit examines the signals sent by the sensors and send commands to the pressure modulator, which operates the brake pressure control valves. The anti-lock braking system provides intermittent braking, which is more efficient than sharp locking of the wheel.
