BMW 1 Series: problems and common defects
- Problems with the start-stop system: These can occur as early as 20,000–30,000 km.
- Defective water pump: This can cause problems from 80,000–100,000 km.
- Malfunctions of the electric windows: Problems often occur after 60,000–80,000 km.
- Problems with the air conditioning system: can occur as early as 40,000–60,000 km.
- Malfunction of LED headlights: Individual LED segments can fail after 50,000–70,000 km.
- Problems with the keyless go system: Malfunctions can occur after 40,000–60,000 km.
BMW 1 Series: Problems with the timing chain
A common problem with the petrol engines of the N45 and N46 series (116i, 118i, 120i) is the elongation of the timing chain, which in the worst case can lead to serious engine damage. Typical signs of a defect include a rattling noise during a cold start, an unsteady engine running and a noticeable loss of power. This weak point mainly affects models from the years of construction 2004 to 2007 (E87). As a preventive measure, it is recommended to replace the timing chain, including the chain tensioner and the guide rail, at around 100,000 km.
BMW 1 Series: turbocharger problems
The turbocharger can cause problems in the three-cylinder engines (116i, 118i) of the F20 series (from 2011). Difficulties usually arise between 60,000 and 100,000 km. Common defects are manifested by a loss of power and increased oil consumption. To extend the service life of the turbocharger, regular oil changes and the use of high-quality oils are recommended.
BMW 1 Series: Weaknesses in diesel
Various problems can occur in the N47 series diesel engines (116d, 118d, 120d) (from 2007). Defects often affect the exhaust gas recirculation system and clogged injectors. To prevent these problems, regular cleaning and the use of high-quality fuel are recommended. If a fault occurs, the affected components usually have to be replaced.
BMW 1 Series: Problems with the automatic transmission
The 6-speed automatic transmission (116i, 118i, 120i) can sometimes be affected by jerky gear changes or delayed start-up. These problems often occur between 50,000 and 100,000 km. A software update of the transmission control unit can often help.
BMW 1 Series: Problems with the rear differential
Models with rear-wheel drive (all except 120d xDrive) may experience oil loss at the rear differential. This usually occurs after 100,000 km. Regular oil level checks and timely replacement of seals are important.
BMW 1 Series: Problems with the convertible top
The soft top of the Convertible (E88, 2008–2013) can occasionally experience mechanical problems or develop leaks. Regular care and impregnation of the convertible top, along with an annual inspection of the mechanics, can prevent problems.
BMW 1 Series: Rust problems
Rust can form on the rear wheel arches and boot lid, especially on models built between 2005 and 2010. Regular inspection and care of the paintwork, as well as prompt repair of stone chips, can effectively prevent rust formation.
BMW 1 Series: Problems with ignition coils
In models from the years of manufacture 2006 to 2010 (E87, E81, E82, E88), the ignition coils can fail, which leads to misfiring and uneven engine running. BMW has started a recall campaign for affected vehicles to replace the ignition coils.
BMW 1 Series: Problems with the electric window regulator
The electric windows, especially on the rear doors, can fail over time. This usually occurs between 60,000 and 100,000 km. Regular lubrication of the mechanism and replacement of worn parts can extend the service life.
Other common faults in BMW 1 Series
Based on the experiences of BMW 1 Series drivers, we provide an overview of other possible problems here:
- Leaks in the rear window washer system: Defects here are often detected between 50,000–70,000 kilometres driven.
- Defective parking sensors: these can fail or produce error messages as early as 30,000–50,000 km.
- Problems with the electric tailgate (if available): these can occur as early as 40,000–60,000 km.
- Wear on the brake discs and pads: often after just 30,000–50,000 km, especially with a sporty driving style.
It is important to note that not every vehicle will have all these complications and that regular maintenance can prevent or minimise many of them. However, when buying a used BMW 1 Series, you should be aware of these potential issues and have the vehicle thoroughly checked.
