13 July 2023 Toyota Avensis: climate control, gearbox problems, and other failures
The Avensis is well built and has plenty of space, especially in the front seats and boot, and is generally known for its reliability, but sometimes develops a great thirst for Toyota Avensis engine oil and like any car, it can experience a number of problems. Let’s take a look at the most common ones.
Gearbox, automatic transmission, and starter motor problems
Two things that have caused some Avensis owners grief are problems with the automatic transmission/gearbox and the starter. A typical Toyota automatic problem is that you literally feel like you're being jolted back and forth. If you take your foot off the accelerator for a moment to adjust the gear pauses, the transmission shifts rather roughly. In Sport mode, you are shifting with the throttle, as the gears are revved up far too high, even at low throttle. Furthermore, the clutch does not always engage in a such way that would allow you to drive away slowly.
Some owners have also reported that their diesel starter makes clicking noises when the key is turned, which is usually due to a low or corroded battery, poor electrical connection, or other electrical faults.
Air conditioning and climate control problems
Air conditioning and climate control are common problems in this car. If you have problems, you may need to top up the coolant or your compressor may be faulty. Check that your condenser is not damaged. This is often caused by stone chips. Make sure your air filter is clean and if it's clogged, replace it immediately. If the air conditioner smells strange or even stinks, it's probably because the evaporator is not working properly, which can cause bacteria to build up. Avensis injector problems
