Production of Peugeot J5 began in 1981 and came to an end in 1994. During this time, a single generation and a restyling was done on the model. The cars were produced on panel van, minivan and chassis bodies. In France, the car quickly became popular, but lost on the worldwide market to its better-known rival, Fiat Dukato.

Visually, all generation 1 Peugeot J5’s are very similar: equally prominent bumpers, headlights, hoods, rear view mirrors. The second door on the passenger side was a sliding one. On commercial models, it opened into the spacious cargo compartment, on the passenger ones - to two rows of comfortable seats. The lifting capacity of the panel van and chassis bodies was up to 2.5 tonnes. Minivans were known for their large, comfortable passenger compartment that used high-end materials for its upholstery.

This generation of cars ran its last in 1991.

In 1991, the company restyled the generation 1 of the Peugeot J5. The main changes touched the exterior: the cars received a new radiator grille with integrated block headlights, the windshield sloped more sharply and showed a stylish black rim. Also, the developers extended the list of available modifications.

In 1994, Peugeot J5 was replaced on the market by Peugeot Boxer.

The J5 model of the Peugeot line-up is a product of collaboration between Fiat and PSA Peugeot Citroën, that created the “Société Européenne de Véhicules Légers” organisation in 1978. As a result, Citroën C25, Fiat Ducato I and Peugeot J5 received identical engines and transmission systems. The cars’ exterior and interior were also practically identical.

In Great Britain, Peugeot J5 were sold under the name of Talbot Express.
