Volvo 260Volvo 260 cars were being produced by Swedish Volvo company since 1974 till 1985. A single generation of the model has been introduced during those years. Car’s release took place in Sweden. Volvo 261C coupe was produced in Turin, Italy.
Volvo 260 I generationThe debut of Volvo 260 cars was held in 1974. The model was constructed on the base of Volvo 240, but differed from it in a more abundant package and improved technical characteristics. Jan Wilsgaard worked on the design. Straight lines and angular forms prevailed in the exterior. Relief wheel housing, windscreen and headlights had chrome-plated trim. Passenger compartment was trimmed with leather and wood. Power glass windows, power steering, air-conditioning and alloy wheels composed basic package.
Initially the Volvo 264 four-door sedan was released. Volvo 265 in a station wagon body debuted in 1975. Volvo 262 two-door sedan was released in 1976.
Official presentation of Volvo 262C coupe was held in 1977 at the Geneva Motor Show. Car’s design was developed by a famous Italian Bertone studio. Coupe differed from other cars with a 6cm lower roof, wide angle of windscreen and Bertone logo on the front wings. The first Volvo 262C was silver and had a black colored vinyl roof. Other alternatives of body color were accessible later. Volvo 262C coupe had an abundant package. Among basic car features there were: power windows, seat heaters, power side-view mirrors, trunk lighting and power steering. Seats had a black leather trim and door panels were decorated with genuine wood inserts.
Volvo 264TE limousine was created on the base of Volvo 264. Design of the body was also developed by the Bertone studio. Car became 70cm longer, which allowed to mount the third line of seats into the passenger compartment. The interior had a grey and blue leather lining. Volvo 264TE limousine was used as a GDR governance formal car. Altogether 335 examples of Volvo 264TE were released.
Volvo 260 I generation faceliftsVolvo 260 cars were being improved regularly. In 1978 the model underwent a facelift. The exterior of the noseof the car was changed most of all. New seats appeared. Car design was renewed again in 1979. Headlights, taillights, baggage compartment’s lid were changed. A new steering wheel was added. Technical features were improved.
In 1980 a regular facelift was held. Bodies of exterior mirrors started to be colored black. Brand logos were renewed. In 1981 a renewed dashboard and gear switch lever were added to the car. Also headlights, radiator grille and hood were upgraded.
Volvo 260 manufacture was canceled in 1985.
