Why are the new brake pads on my Skoda making strange sounds?

• It could be due to the protective coating. New pads make a squealing sound which usually stops after the bedding-in process.
• Water or dirt gets between the components. This often occurs after driving the car off-road or in rainy or cold weather. To dry the brakes, you can warm them up by pressing the pedal sharply several times. If there is a lot of hard dirt, dismantle the wheel and clean the discs with a metal brush and a special cleaning agent.
• Insufficient contact between the pads and brake discs. This could be caused by jammed calliper guide pins and pistons, a buildup of dirt on the caliper bracket and body, and weak springs.
• The brakes do not have anti-squeal shims. Shims help to distribute the applied pressure evenly over the pad lining, protecting it against damage. If used in combination with the anti-squeal paste, the shims help to dampen vibrations and stop the pads and rotors from clashing together.

Are brake pads for Skoda vehicles sold as a set?

Yes. The set includes four components for one axle, as well as four compression springs and, occasionally, the anti-squeal shims and paste.

What rules should I follow in order to extend the service life of my brake pads?

• Replace the brake discs on time. Worn or deformed discs and deep dents on the disc surface cause the pads to wear unevenly and more rapidly. It is therefore important to install new discs not only when they are worn down, but also if there are cracks, chips, dents, or traces of corrosion.
• Try to brake smoothly. This prevents the brakes from overheating and the pads from glazing.
• Check the components regularly and carry out routine maintenance tasks. Lubricate the guide pins and pistons regularly to prevent jamming and ensure an even pressure distribution. It is also advisable to check the condition of the cuffs and boots.
• Clean and lubricate the components of the braking system. When installing new parts, lubricate their points of contact with the calipers using an anti-squeal lubricant and clean the disc surface.
• Replace the compression springs. They get weaker over time and, as a result, the parts gradually become less stable.
