The problem with the engine for the Opel Astra L, especially with the 1.2-litre turbo engines, often lies in the design of the timing belt. The sadly famous Bloc 1.2 PureTech from PSA, used in the Astra in 110 hp and 130 hp versions, has a specific problem: the timing belts are immersed in an oil bath and can fray. The problem with the timing chain of the 1.5-litre diesel engine in the Opel Astra L often occurs when the chain is prematurely worn. The timing chain can stretch and cause noise during cold starts. Over time, the chain can have so much play that it can hinder the engine from turning or even break, causing serious damage to the mechanical components. From the beginning of 2023, modifications were made at the factory, and for models built before that, Opel recommends using a different type of engine oil (5W30 instead of 0W30).

The infotainment system in the Opel Astra L can occasionally experience problems, such as crashes, malfunctions or software update errors. These problems can occur early on, often within the first 30,000 km. A common problem is the faulty connection of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, which can lead to frequent disconnections. Furthermore, the system sometimes cannot start completely or only sporadically display the start animation.
To fix these issues, regular software updates of the infotainment system are necessary. Restarting the system or resetting to factory settings can help with crashes. In some cases, repair or replacement of hardware components may be necessary. It also helps to delete all paired devices and re-pair them to fix failures.
The automatic transmission in the Opel Astra L, in particular the 8-speed EAT8 transmission, can occasionally have difficulties with jerky gear changes or delayed start-up. These complications often occur between 50,000 and 100,000 km. A common problem is that the transmission shifts down too early or, in some situations, up a gear, resulting in low engine speeds and increased vibrations. In such cases, you often have to downshift, give a throttle kick or directly switch to manual mode.
A software update of the transmission control unit can usually help. It is also important to change the transmission fluid and filters according to the manufacturer's specifications. In some cases, replacing the control unit or mechatronics may also be necessary to permanently resolve the issues.
In addition to the problems described above, there are other weak points that may occur in the Opel Astra L.
Some owners report leaks on the driver's door, especially on the B-pillar. This can cause noise from passing cars, especially when it rains. This problem can be caused by an assembly error and often occurs after only a short time driving.
To solve this problem, it is necessary to check and possibly replace the seals and the door's closing mechanism. A thorough inspection of the bodywork can also help to detect other possible leaks.
Another problem with the Opel Astra L is fogging of the rear lights from the inside. This occurs often and can be caused by a lack of ventilation or leaks in the light housing.
To fix this problem, the light housing must be inspected and, if necessary, cleaned or replaced. It is also advisable to check the ventilation systems of the lights and make sure they are working properly.
