Mitsubishi Starion
Production of Mitsubishi Starion sports cars continued in 1982-1989. Assembling of cars was organized in the city of Okazaki, Japan.
The model became one of the first modern Japanese cars equipped with a turbine engine with electronic system of fuel injection. Thanks to excellent dynamics of acceleration and good controllability, the car won multiple rally and ring races.
In 1984 the car won the SCCA international competitions in the Nelson Ledge 24 hours Race, and in 1986, in the Japanese All Japan Touring Car Championship in the Race de Nippon Tsukuba Race de Nippon Tsukuba. In 1984-1988 the famous racer Colin Blower operated the Mitsubishi Starion vehicle. In 1986 this racer was awarded the prestigious Mitsubishi Driver of the Year Award.
Mitsubishi Starion I generation
Mitsubishi Starion sports coupes were produced in standard and enlarged bodies. Width of the first one was 1685 mm, of the second one— 1745 mm. All the cars, produced since 1988, were 1735 mm in width. Depending on the body width, weight of the car varied from 1260 to 1340 kg.
The Mitsubishi Starion model had ergonomic front seats with adjustments of the slope angle of the back, height, lumbar and knee support adjustment. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) was a basic option.
For the Japanese market, Mitsubishi Starion GX modifications with the naturally aspirated engine were manufactured till 1983. Power windows, air conditioner, an independent back suspension or power steering were not included in the package of these cars.
Mitsubishi Starion I generation restyling
In September, 1987, there was a restyling of the model. The renewed Mitsubishi Starion Turbo EX model had more modern hardware so the car power was increased. Also changes affected design of the exterior. There was a spoiler on the boot that positively affected aerodynamics of the body. Cars began to be equipped with two catalytic converters and a complex system of cleaning of exhaust gases. Power windows in the modernized cars continued to work for 30 seconds the after engine was stopped.
In 1988-1989 cars with a SHP sports package of options were available in the USA. These cars featured adaptive suspension and wheel discs increased by one inch.
