Renault 17Renault 17 and Renault 15 coupes were released by the French firm from 1971 to 1979. Outwardly Renault 17 cars differed from the Renault 15 model in the configuration of head optics (Renault 15 had two rectangular headlights, Renault 17 — 4 round ones) and rear side windows.
Renault 17. I generationIn 1966 the Renault company, having refused development of the project of a small double coupe together with the producer of Gordini racing cars, concentrated on release of Renault 12 sedan. However, being guided by a wide range of buyers, the company decided not to limit the range by one sedan only and released the whole range of cars, similar to Renault 12 model. So there were coupes of Renault 17 and Renault 15 models.
The chassis and running gear of Renault 17 were borrowed from Renault 12, but the design of the body was unique. The presentation of Renault 17 took place at the Parisian motor show of 1971.
The designers when developing the dashboard for Renault 17 supplied each of four dials with a folding peak: in the afternoon it could be moved away to let the sun lit the devices, and in the evening — to put it back that the reflection at the windshield did not abstract the driver. However such design approach did not get accustomed so the peaks of devices were fixed in one position.
In September, 1974 at the motor show in Paris the modification of Renault 17 TS was presented under the name of Renault 17 TS Gordini (because of cessation of production of Renault 12 Gordini). However, practically nothing was changed: besides a new name, the car (as well as all the scale of Renault 15-17) received the alarm system and more volume tank for the screen washer.
Renault 17. I generation restylingIn 1976 as a result of restyling the radiator grille began to be painted in colour similar with a colour of the body. The dashboard began to look accurately and laconically — at this time the producer cared more of quality, than of originality. New narrow front seats with four independent regulated pillows for support of trunk position became the largest change in the compartment. Also because of fuel crisis it was necessary to reduce the power of engines.
In the history of model there was also a sport page: in 1974 the pilots operating Renault 17 took the first and third places at the American stage of the World Cup in rally of Press-on-Regardless Rally.
Renault 17 and Renault 15 were produced till the middle of 1979 when they were replaced by the Renault Fuego model.
