s car was produced by Renault company from 1978 to 1986. In total one generation of model was presented. In the first years after releasing the car enjoyed wide popularity: in France it was the bestseller in its class. In 1980 the Renault 18 model appeared on the tenth place in the list of the most bought cars in Britain.

Renault 18 car was designed on the basis of Renault 12 which was outdate and had much in common with the predecessor. In March, 1978 at the Geneva motor show the official debut of a sedan of Renault 18 took place. In October, 1978 at the Parisian motor show the station wagon was presented.

The car won popularity quickly, thanks to economical engines, quite good principal specifications and the wide list of available options in many respects. Heating of rear window, electric window regulators, electronic clock, adjustable compartment mirror, central lock were included in the richest complete set of Renault 18. As an additional options the conditioner, cleaners of headlights and the hatch were offered. In finishing the velour was used (in cheaper options — fabric and an imitation leather).

The design of the car turned out a little outdated because of an angular form of the body, rectangular headlights, big front overhang and the three-spoke rims borrowed from aged models.

In 1980 sports modification of Renault 18 Turbo was presented at the Parisian motor show . Aluminum rims, a back spoiler and sports seats were established. In finishing of Renault 18 Turbo leather was used. It was possible to order the Philips/Renault audio system with four loudspeakers for an extra pay.

In the early 80th in France the tragic cases as a result of a street racing became more frequent. There was a necessity in the patrol of the highway and streets. As official cars the French police used Renault 18 cars.

In March, 1984 the design of Renault 18 was modernized slightly. The radiator grille was updated, and metal bumpers and door handles were replaced by plastic ones. The chrome plated mouldings were painted in black opaque color. There was an updated dashboard and new comfortable seats in the passenger compartment. The quality of finishing of an interior was improved also.

In the advertizing slogan Renault 18 was positioned as "the car with the international demand" therefore the assembling of these cars was carried out worldwide. In Europe release of model was adjusted in France, Spain, Croatia, Slovenia, Finland, Greece, Poland, Norway, Sweden and Cyprus.

Renault 18 models were released outside Europe also: in Argentina, Australia, Colombia, Mexico, Morocco, Côte d'Ivoire, Uruguay, Venezuela, Algeria, Indonesia, Israel, Zimbabwe, Syria, the USA, Canada, Thailand and in Turkey. In Argentina this car was produced till 1993.
