The model was positioned as a family vehicle. By means of Renault 21 releasing producer planned to strengthen the position in the automobile markets of Europe, North and South America. Production of a car was carried out during the period from 1986 to 1995.

The debut of the Renault 21 model took place in the spring in1986 at the motor show in Geneva. The design of a car was developed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. Initially the car was released in a sedan body, but until the end of the year the station wagon was released, and in 1989 — a five-door hatchback went on sale.

The capacious compartment and convenient adjustable seats provided a high level of comfort. At the designing of this model the producer allocated enough empty place for legs of the passengers sitting on back seats. Electric window regulators were included in the basic package of the car.

The station wagon was most convenient and capacious body as its wheel base was increased by 150 mm in comparison with a sedan and a hatchback. The luggage carrier of 675 liters extended to 1920 liters if necessary because of folding backs of back seats. The car of Renault 21 Familiale had a seven-seater compartment.

Existence of the hydraulic power steering significantly simplified driving even at the full load. The car had an independent forward suspension of McPherson type and a back dependent spring and torsion suspension. The belly clearance of the car was 120 mm. The car differed in good stability on a paving.

In 1989 the car received the new dashboard, the improved finishing of the compartment and climate control. The design of the front and the rear part of a body changed slightly. To increase of level of safety the producer equipped thr model with the anti-blocking brake ABS system in addition to the available passive protection against crash. Renault 21 cars were made till 1995.

In Great Britain the four-wheel drive car in a body of the five-door station wagon was on sale under the name Renault Savanna, and in Argentina and the USA — Renault Nevada.
