The sport car in a roadster body was released under the name Renault Sport Spider from 1996 to 1999. There were two road modifications of a sport car and a racing one, known as Renault Sport Spider Trophy. The last became a winner at automobile competitions at once. Aluminum chassis for roadsters were manufactured in Denmark, and final assembling was made in France, at plant in Dieppe. For years of production only 1726 cars were released.

The Renault company have thought of creation of an easy and ultramodern sports roadster still in the late eighties. In 1990 at the Parisian motor show the Renault Laguna Roadster concept car has been shown. The car has at once won a prize for the best design. Prompt lines in combination with smooth forms, relief sidewalls, narrow headlights, low boarding, a glass cabin and doors which could be removed — all these made the appearance of a conceptual roadster bright and unique. The concept of Renault Laguna Roadster has found the continuation in the Renault Sport Spider car.

The debut of stock model took place at the Geneva motor show in 1995. All roadsters of Renault Sport Spider had no roof. Modification of Renault Sport Spider Saute-vent, as well as a concept, was equipped with the wind deflector instead of a windshield therefore the driver and the passenger had to wear special helmets. The Renault Sport Spider roadster Pare-brise had a full-fledged windshield. Additional protective arches instead of a cabin were set at the racing modification of Renault Sport Spider Trophy. In the British Spider Cup tournament which is a basic lap for larger championships, the racer Jason Plato in 1998 got 11 victories from 14 rounds on this car. One year later the racer Andy Priaulx managed to win all 13 rounds at the same championship.

Renault Sport Spider cars had a very low boarding characteristic of sport cars. In all cars special protective arches were established behind the seats. The airbag for the driver, radio, a luggage carrier on 30 kg, a special tent were offered as an additional options. The last two options were available only in Renault Sport Spider Pare-brise modification. Bodies of these cars was made of plastic.
