Fiat 125This middle-class car was produced by the Fiat company from 1967 to 1972. In five years two generations of model were released. Cars were assembled in Poland, Yugoslavia, Morocco, Argentina and Colombia.
History of Fiat 125 creationThe car, the release of which continued from 1967 to 1969, was constructed on the basis of Fiat 124. It differed from the predecessor in the extended wheel base that was borrowed from Fiat 1500. Traditional lines of the Italian sedans and station wagons of that time — right angles and sharp lines —characterized this model as well. Round head and rectangular back lights and the narrow inexpressive radiator grille completed the image of the car.
The Fiat 125 designers tried to equip the car with original technical solutions. Thus, the first cars had the four-speed mechanical gearbox that allowed to improve the roadability of the cars. The technology of transmission was borrowed by Italians from Porsche.
Fiat 125 SIn 1968 at the Turin motor show the Fiat 125 S modification was presented. Designers improved an exterior, set chrome plated disks, renewed dashboard, wooden elements of the interior trimming of the car. Sound insulation and a security system were improved. Light-alloy disks, tinted glasses, a conditioner and rear screen heating appeared in the list of options.
Release of 125 S was stopped in 1970. Fiat 125 SpecialFiat 125 Special was produced from 1970 to 1972. The new car got a changed radiator grille, enlarged headlights and high-quality materials of interior finishing. Designers set rubber inserts in the bumper and transferred direction indicators from the headlight assembly into it.
The unique structure of a steering column that folded at a head-on collision became a distinctive feature of the car. Such improvement of passive safety was revolutionary in the 70-s of the 20th century. Motorists of the whole world spoke of Fiat 125 Special as a reliable, high-quality and stylish car.
Fiat 125 in the markets of different countriesIn Poland the model was known under the name Polski Fiat 125. In the market of Yugoslavia the car was released by the local car maker under the name of Zastava 125. The cars produced in Argentina, Colombia, South Africa, New Zealand and the Czech Republic had a number of differences from original Italian model in body arrangement.
