Mitsubishi Cordia
Production of Mitsubishi Cordia lasted from 1982 to 1990. Cars were assembled at the Nagoya plant in the Japanese city of Okazaki, Aichi prefecture. Also assembling of these cars was organized in New Zealand.
Model I generation
Mitsubishi Cordia cars were released in a three-door hatchback body. Along with Mitsubishi Tredia and Mitsubishi Starion cars, the Mitsubishi Cordia model was one of the first cars imported and sold in the USA without participation of the Chrysler Corporation — the partner of Mitsubishi Motors corporation those years.
Mitsubishi Cordia was constructed on the basis of the Mitsubishi Tredia model and its exterior was practically the same as the exterior of Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback. In design of the body the straight lines were traced - they were in harmony with mouldings and rectangular headlights. On some cars, spoilers were installed. The comfortable and spacious passenger compartment was the advantage of the Mitsubishi Cordia model. It was achieved at the expense of quite large body dimensions: length comprised 4275 mm, width — 1660 mm, and height — 1320 mm.
Model I generation restyling
In 1983 there was a small restyling of the car. External changes affected the front bumper. The radiator grille was changed. In 1984 the four-wheel drive system was offered. In 1985 modifications with the power units working on unleaded fuel were available for sale.
In the same 1985 at the motor show in Frankfurt the premiere of Mitsubishi Cordia Cabriolet Turbo car with a folding rigid top took place. The car was manufactured in the single copy.
In 1986-1988 modifications of Mitsubishi Cordia Turbo were released.
After 1988, Mitsubishi Cordia cars were not on sale in the USA any more, and in 1990 production of this model was stopped. The model was succeeded by Mitsubishi Eclipse.
Mitsubishi Cordia in the markets of the different countries
In Japan cars were known under two names - Mitsubishi Cordia XP and Mitsubishi Cordia XG. As Mitsubishi Cordia XP cars were sold by Car Plaza retail network, and under the name Mitsubishi Cordia XG — the Galant Shop network. In comparison with Mitsubishi Cordia XP, Mitsubishi Cordia XG had the reduced radiator grille.
