Release of Citroën CX was carried out from 1974 to 1991. In total, one generation of the model and two restylings were presented. In 1975 Citroën CX became the title holder "The European car of year". Assembling of these cars was organized in France.

The official premiere of Citroën CX took place at the Parisian motor show in 1974. Several weeks before the presentation, the car was presented to the journalists and was highly appreciated. The name of the model came from designation of drag coefficient - Cx - and suggested the excellent aerodynamics of the car. This car had really record Cx indicator for those times — only 0.39.

The car differed in bright and modern design. Whereas the majority of the cars of other brands had angular lines and rectangular shapes in the exterior, Citroën CX had smooth lines of a body, expressive sidewalls and a concave rear screen. In expensive packages, door handles, mirror cases and mouldings were covered with chrome. A five-door hatchback and a station wagon were available.

The passenger compartment differed in roominess and comfort. The one-spoke steering wheel, typical for many Citroën models, did not close the dashboard indicators. The cars had speedometers of drum type. Several variants of interior colouring were offered. In some packages aluminum inserts were used in the inner trimming.

The long version of Citroën CX— Citroën CX Prestige — enjoyed popularity among celebrities and officials. In 1995 the president of France Jacques Chirac crossed Paris on this car to deliver a victorious speech in honour of the election. As an official car, this car was also used by Erich Honecker, the former president of GDR.

After restyling of 1982, power windows and central lock were installed at all the cars in a basic package. The dashboard was redesigned a little. In an exterior, change concerned headlights, the radiator grille and bumpers. The second restyling of Citroën CX was carried out in 1985. The dashboard was updated; the chrome bumpers were replaced by plastic ones. In 1991 the production of Citroën CX was terminated.
