Volkswagen Derby
Volkswagen Derby cars are sedans released from 1977 to 1985. Local production of this model in the some markets continued till 2008. The car was manufactured in the city of Wolfsburg, Germany.
Volkswagen Derby І generation
Release of the model started in 1977. At once after the presentation the car became popular that caused great sales in the domestic German market and in other countries of Europe.
Volkswagen Derby was created on the basis of the first generation of the Volkswagen Polo model therefore partially borrowed from it the engine, transmission and suspension. Nevertheless, developers changed the gear shifting moment: the fourth gear became longer that increased the overall torque of the engine and increased efficiency of the car. Engineers provided only petrol modifications.
Volkswagen Derby І generation restyling
In 1979 designers carried out small face lifting of the model. The shape of the front of the body was changed a little, and the bumper and the radiator grille became plastic. Internal panels of the passenger compartment were modified completely. Their design was brought closer to panels of the Volkswagen Polo model as much as possible.
Volkswagen Derby ІІ generation
In 1981 there was the second generation of the model. The car received the updated design of the exterior: squared headlights and new tail lights were installed on the car. The radiator grille and the bumpers were changed. Also developers changed the shape of the wheel arches and fenders a little.
Despite changes, sales fell considerably therefore in 1985 release of the Volkswagen Derby model was stopped.
Volkswagen Derby in the markets of the different countries
After the termination of release in 1985, the design of the Volkswagen Derby car was renewed based on the style of the Volkswagen Polo model, and after the rebadging the car was produced under the new name — Volkswagen Polo Classic.
After changing of style and the name, the sales didn’t increase, therefore in 1990 production of the second generation of Volkswagen Polo Classic in Germany was stopped. The Volkswagen Polo Classic car in a body of a sedan became available only after the complete reconstruction of the model in 1997, but also it was not widely adopted.
The Mexican plant Volkswagen resumed production of the Volkswagen Derby model under the original name in 1995. The updated car became became the rebadging of SEAT Córdoba version with some changes. The Mexican designers assembled Volkswagen Derby almost completely from the spare parts delivered by subsidiary of SEAT concern.
In 2002 in Europe production of the third generation Volkswagen Polo Classic was stopped, but in America release of the model continued. The car was on sale in the South American market mainly, but the limited number of cars was delivered to Europe also . Since 2002 the Mexican production began to use the parts delivered by the Argentina plant Volkswagen.
Small face lifting of Volkswagen Derby was carried out in 2006. Developers changed the shape of front headlights, radiator grilles and bumpers a little. The Mexican designers suggested to carry out restyling in 2008, but sales of the car fell strongly therefore it was decided to stop the release of the model.
Actually, production of the car was continued in 2010, but under the name of Volkswagen Polo Classic.
