Volkswagen Phaeton
Volkswagen Phaeton is a car of a representative class produced since 2002 till present.
The name "Phaeton" is taken from the Greek mythology. The phaeton is one of god Helios's sons. A phaeton is also a type of horse-drawn carriage.
The model is manufactured at Volkswagen plant in Dresden, Germany.
Volkswagen Phaeton I generation
The Volkswagen Phaeton model was developed to stir up the German market of prestigious cars and to help Volkswagen come to dominate it. During development stage, project managers created 10 requirements which the car had to meet.
One of such requirements was the capability to reach the speed of 300 km/h at the external air temperature of 50 °C, but the internal temperature in the passenger compartment not exceeding 22 °C.
Volkswagen's Concept D was presented in 1999 at the German international automobile festival, but the Volkswagen Phaeton model went to stock production in 2002.
The car was developed on the Volkswagen Group D1 platform which is also used in the Bentley Continental GT and Bentley Continental Flying Spur models. In total, development of the car led to 100 separate patents of design ideas, technical improvements and elements for convenience.
Automatic distance regulator, dynamic headlights, traffic sign recognition, built-in 3G mobile Internet, built-in Google Earth navigation system of Google Earth were the biggest highlights.
In 2005 developers presented the extended modification of Volkswagen Phaeton Lounge cars. It received the improved transmission, individual climate control for each passenger, a cigar humidifier, two 17-inch monitors, two wine coolers, a computer with built-in Internet connection.
Volkswagen Phaeton I generation restylings
Designers updated the Volkswagen Phaeton model in 2007 and presented it at the automobile festival in Geneva. Developers installed LED daytime running lights, also called parking lights. The central console was considerably updated and the materials used in it were replaced.
The altered direct fuel injection system increased the power and efficiency of engines of all modifications. Besides, the model had carbon-ceramic brakes, blind zone warning system and a rear-view camera.
Developers unveiled the second facelift at the auto show in Beijing in 2010.
After the second restyling, the car got an updated design of the nose. Its exterior became closer to standards of the Volkswagen company: designers installed xenon headlights and changed their shape a little, reconstructed bumpers and changed the radiator grille.
The Volkswagen Phaeton model also got an updated anti-lock brake system (ABS), the traction control system (ASR), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) and emergency automatic braking (AEB) systems.
