VCDi engines: operating characteristics of Chevrolet common rail diesel engines
VCDi is a range of innovative turbocharged diesel engines. Their notable feature is a common rail direct fuel injection system. These power units are installed in Chevrolet vehicles.
The VCDi engines were produced by the Italian company VM Motori SpA since 2006. Those were 4-cylinder 2.0 litre engines with 121 and 150 hp power. They were used in Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Optra, Chevrolet Epica and Chevrolet Captiva models.
Since 2010 the manufacture of VCDi engines has been established by the General Motors Korea branch. The number and position of cylinders has remained unchanged. However, the aluminum cylinder head and the intake manifold geometry has been improved. Combined with variable timing it has provided the maximum pressure level in the intake line. Due to this factor the engine efficiency has considerably enhanced.
The following power units have become available:
- 2.2 L VCDi I4 161 hp;
- 2.2 L VCDi I4 181 hp;
- 2.0 L VCDi I4 129 hp;
- 2.0 L VCDi I4 161 hp.
The VCDi engines are installed in Chevrolet Orlando, Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Captiva models.
