Lamborghini Diablo
Lamborghini Diablo is the sports car released from 1990 to 2001. It became the first Lamborghini car capable of accelerating up to 200 miles an hour (320 km/h). The model was presented in coupe and roadster bodies. In total, 2903 copies were released.
Lamborghini Diablo I generation
The name of the model by tradition of the Lamborghini Company was related to bullfight and was inspired by a legend of the Devil (El Diablo), a ferocious bull belonging to duke Veragua who lost a fight to the famous torero José De Lara. Work on the design of this sports car, intended to replace Lamborghini Countach, began in 1985. The car was initially styled by Marcello Gandini, but it seemed excessively aggressive to directors of Chrysler (new owners of Lamborghini). To great displeasure of Gandini, a group of designers from Detroit restyled the design of Lamborghini Diablo.
The presentation of the model took place on January 21, 1990, in Hotel de Paris in Monte-Carlo. The car body was made of different materials: steel was used for the roof, aluminium for doors and splash guards; spoilers, hoods and door thresholds were made of carbon fiber impregnated with pitch.
Lamborghini Diablo had rather poor serial equipment: they did not even have power windows. Lack of air inlets in the front bumper and high placement of the dashboard that sometimes created problems with visibility, were distinctive features of the model.
In 1993 Lamborghini Diablo VT in a coupe body was released. The car had a four-wheel drive and air inlets. At the Geneva motor show in 1992, the concept of Lamborghini Diablo roadster was presented and collected many positive comments. However there were three years of research and development before the Lamborghini Diablo VT roadster went on sale.
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Lamborghini Company in 1994, there was a limited release of Lamborghini Diablo SE30. Car weight was reduced as much as possible, side windows were made of plexiglass, and the air conditioner, stereo system and even hydraulic power steering booster were removed from the car. In total 150 cars were produced. 15 of them were a bit later remade in Lamborghinis Diablo SE30 Jota which differed in two air inlets leading to the roof for improvement of engine cooling. Such design of the car was intended for the GT championships though actually none of them took part in races.
In 1995 the Lamborghini Diablo family was joined by a rear-drive Lamborghini Diablo SV with 18-inch disks, double air inlets and an updated dashboard.
Lamborghini Diablo I generation restyling
In 1999 restyling of Lamborghini Diablo took place. Pop-up headlights replaced with fixed headlights were the most obvious change. In total, Lamborghinis Diablo had 18-inch rims and the new dashboard. The same year there was Lamborghini Diablo GT — the car could accelerate to 338 km/h and was released to participate in races. In total, 80 copies were produced.
In 2000 Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0, differing from predecessors in front part and cast disks, was available for sale. The car was available only in a coupe body: release of roadsters was stopped because of creating of Lamborghini Murciélago. Before the model left production, in 2001 special release of Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0 SE took place (42 copies were produced). Only two body colours were available: the golden metallic symbolized sunrise, and the dark claret symbolized sunset.
