Rover 800 is a business class car, production of which was in process in 1986-1999. There were produced about 317 306 cars during this period. Manufacturing established in Oxford, Birmingham.

Rover 800 XS replaced Rover SD1. Model was designed in cooperation with Honda Motor Co. and was built on the platform of Honda Legend. Despite the fact that cars got common construction and a number of units, these cars had different interior and exterior design.

At the beginning of manufacturing sedans rolled off the assembly line. Car body had straight lines. Moldings and elongate headlights pointed on car geometry. Five-door fastbacks were produced since 1988. Most of these cars were sold in Great Britain.

On June 6, 1990, Tony Pond set a record: driving Rover 827 Vitesse he passed Isle of Man Tourist Trophy per 22 minutes at mid-speed 160 km/h. This road was usually used for motorcycle racing.

Rover 800 XS had spacious and ergonomic compartment. But car couldn’t gain popularity because of low build quality, low quality of lacquer coating and interior trim materials. Corrosion was common problem for those cars.

Rover 800 Coupe was presented in Birmingham exhibition center NEC in 1991. Production of this model started at the beginning of 1992. Cars got 16-inch Rover Prestige alloy wheels. Rover 800 Coupe was not sold in the USA.

First restyling of Rover 800 XS happened in 1991. As a result car had a new design and was also redesigned. Body lines became more curved. Moreover, car got traditional radiator grille. Car sales increased after restyling. Rover 800 XS was the most popular in the USA during the period till mid-1990s.

Next restyling happened in 1996. Black radiator grille became chromed. All cars got climate control system and passengers airbags. CD-changer for 6 disks was also among basic options. Interior design also changed. Wooden panels appeared inside. Seats were covered with leather.

Rover 800 XS was sold in the USA under the name of Sterling 800 series. On European and other markets sedan of top configuration was called Rover Sterling. Fastbacks of top configuration were known as Rover Vitesse.
